Inviting Jesus Into Storytime

Homeschooling at our house is going… alright.

Meaning it goes well on the days I follow through and actually pull out our supplies and work with Emmy.

On the other six days a week, I at least try to sit and read a pile of books with her. Reading is one of those rare times where she is (mostly) still and focused on one thing. She loves reading, loves stories, and really loves the Bible.

In fact, she’s a little bit in love with Jesus. She will often wrap her Winnie the Pooh blanket over her head, carry Bear around and tell me that she’s Mary, holding Baby Jesus. (She’ll also instruct me to shush, because he is sleeping. Obviously.)

So, that’s why we’ve been loving the Jesus & Me Bible Storybook. It’s a collection of short readings based on Scripture. Each one dives into a question about Jesus, or a quality he possessed, and brings it down to kid level without losing any of the important stuff. There’s a prayer at the end of each reading as well, and Emmy loves to pray. Mostly thanking God for her dresses, but hey, we’re heading in the right direction, I think.

We’ve really enjoyed incorporating this book into our reading times. It’s definitely aimed toward older kids (more words than pictures), but it’s understandable and short enough for a toddler, in my opinion. And I like reading things to Emmy that might be just a little bit above her level, to keep her growing. (ZPD, for all you teachers out there!)

We just started a nightly family devotion. There is a verse, a story and an activity, we all enjoy it. this book would be fantastic to use with Simon and eventually Lucy.

Thanks Kayse – Waumba Land at church on Sundays sends home a devotional for the week geared specifically for her age group – so we read it every night.

  3. Hannah says

We try and give God credit for everything and to thank Him for the little things throughout the day. And then we say what we are thankFul for and pray at the end of (most) days.
